Since 1980, nationals from Uganda have been undertaking short and long term studies both in Australia and Africa sponsored by the Australian Government through Australia Awards. They are eligible to apply for Australia Awards Short Courses.

Priority areas are:
Ugandan alumni have been employed in senior positions in government, including as, medical researchers and as senior staff for major Non-Government Organisations. Ugandan alumni are employed across a wide range of government ministries such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health and in other organisations such as Oxfam, Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University, Northern Uganda Malaria AIDS and Tuberculosis Program.
