Australia Awards – Africa held an inaugural Welcome Home Function in Ethiopia on 18 February 2015 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Addis Ababa.  The half-day event attracted 20 guests, recently returned Alumni from the Australia Awards and IM4DC programs, their work supervisors, representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Ethiopian Coordinating Authority and other officials from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a half-day event in which scholars who recently completed their studies were welcomed back from Australia. Poster presentations by Alumni who had returned six-to-12 months ago showcased development-focussed projects they are leading in Ethiopia and added an interactive dimension to the Function. These initiatives showed how high quality education can translate into concrete development benefits through the application of knowledge and skills when students return to their home country. The event also provided a valuable opportunity to connect recently returned scholars to Alumni and provide a platform for establishing support networks.
